And Your Name Shall be…………

Genesis 17:5

No longer will you be called Abram; your name will be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations.

We each have a calling of God on our lives.  He has purposed us for things greater than that which we can see ourselves being part of.  He loves us dearly and wants us to walk in His higher ways (Psalm 139:16-17).  But many of us have had negative and limiting labels placed upon our lives by our parents, schoolmates, co-workers and sometimes even ourselves.  We have been told that we will never amount to much or that we are a failure in one way or the other.  We believe ourselves to be incapable of greater things and limit ourselves to “just getting by”.

Abram was closing in on 99 years old when God changed his name to Abraham and told him he would be the father of many nations.  This seemed an impossibility at the time!  Yet God knew of the greatness of the life that he had planned for him.  Abraham had made the mistake of relying on his own strength to fulfill the promise of a child which the Lord had promised and went into Hagar.  This only brought strife into his life.  He had lied about Sarah when entering Egypt once again relying on his own strength to protect her.  Yet later it was said of Abraham that he believed God (trust or faith) and it was reckoned unto him as righteousness (Genesis 15:6).  At the proper time, God brought forth His promise with the birth of Isaac.

No matter what name others have given to us or mistakes we have made in our lives God has great plans for us (Jeremiah 29:11-13).  His love and His purposes for our lives still remains.  Once we have turned to Him, we need to see ourselves as God sees us.  In II Corinthians 5:17 we are told that “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.”  We need to believe God, trusting in His strength to makes us strong (II Corinthians 12:9).  We need only to follow and obey Him and He will give us life as no other can (John 10:10)!  He will give you a new name, you will be called more than a conqueror (Romans 8:37); and a child of the living God (John 1:12)!  God will do great things in you and through you as you place your trust in Him and the promises He has made in His Word!
